A few ways to prevent future wars: A study by TradeFxP
A myriad of approaches exists to resolve conflicts and bring an end to war, presenting a perplexing paradox in the recent tumultuous clash between Israel and Gaza. Curiously, both sides harboured no desire for warfare, yet conversing without invoking the very topic proved elusive. Language intertwines seamlessly with action, and if one remains entrenched in the metaphorical realm of war, complete with victors and losers, long-lasting enmities, and an idealised image of the warrior archetype, attaining true cessation becomes an insurmountable feat.
Within a war mentality, a clean resolution to conflict remains an unattainable fantasy. The victors of one battle inevitably become the losers in the next engagement, ultimately plunging all involved parties into an engulfing quagmire from which neither side can emerge triumphant. The conflict mindset perseveres by relentlessly reinforcing the same metaphorical framework of strife. History has demonstrated that war is devoid of reason, unforgiving in its grip, and perpetual, from the ravages of World War I to Vietnam to Afghanistan. In this landscape, we find both war heroes and war criminals on opposing sides.
However, a method does exist to terminate conflicts—one that thrives wherever humanity acknowledges our shared aspirations for a prosperous, healthy, and sustainable world. Alas, war fails to serve this universal objective. The crux lies in determining how long it will take for a noble global vision to supersede the deeply rooted metaphor of war—an ideology intertwined with nationalism, tribalism, racial and ethnic divisions, and other remnants born out of prolonged strife. These divisions persist solely due to the constructs created by human minds—a crucial realisation being that everything we fabricate can be reversed.
Amidst copious bloodshed and loss of life, assigning blame for war to a flawed concept appears ludicrous. William Blake aptly coined these self-imposed constraints as "mind-forged shackles"—a form of self-imprisonment. Only through a transformation of our beliefs can we cast off these burdensome chains. Presented here are several alternatives to the prevailing notion of war:
1. Diminish the number of adversaries, viewing them not only as opponents but also as rivals, partners, teachers, and equals.
2.
Embrace respect for differing viewpoints, as failing to do so leads to abandonment before meaningful dialogue even commences.
3.
Acknowledge that both sides harbour a sense of injustice, finding common ground upon which mutual understanding can flourish.
4.
Cultivate forgiveness and seek repentance, relinquishing desires for retaliation and vengeance—a courageous act indeed. Even if one perceives the opposing side as unworthy of mercy, inner peace remains a personal entitlement.
5.
Eschew contentious arguments that breed animosity and further fuel hatred, recognizing such behaviour as bullying in disguise.
6.
Engage emotional intelligence by comprehending the feelings of others, endowing those sentiments with significance equal to one's own.
7.
Strive to comprehend the values held by the opposition—both individually and culturally—eradicating the fog of war that descends when adversaries remain ignorant of each other's realities. The ultimate goal lies in fostering mutual acceptance rooted in our shared yearning for similar outcomes.
8.
Avoid entangling negotiations within political and religious ideological disputes that hinder progress towards resolution.
9.
Recognize concerns present on both sides, fearlessly sharing anxieties while inquiring about the fears gripping the opposing faction.
10.
Abandon the insistence on being correct and proving one's opponent wrong—an act that liberates individuals to focus on genuine desires rather than ego-driven quests.
These principles extend beyond geographical borders and can be applied within any context requiring negotiation, be it among nations or within familial dynamics. However, unless these concepts permeate our collective consciousness and inform our coping mechanisms, their potential remains untapped. War stands as the most destructive coping method, yet it often arises as an initial emotional response to opposition, obstacles, and defeats.
To combat warfare on a national scale, individuals must first acquire the tools to navigate conflicts effectively. The foundation of peace lies in the tranquil consciousness each person nurtures. Even if we lack direct influence over the interactions between nations, we possess agency in choosing to cultivate a peace-conscious mindset and actively implementing these concepts in our daily lives. The very survival of our planet hinges on as many individuals as possible heeding this call with the utmost urgency.
International relations and policy experts often recommend diplomacy and arms control as two strategies to reduce the likelihood of conflict. The success of various arms control and diplomatic negotiation strategies varies. The vast body of research and historical writings on these methods are beyond the scope of this chapter (Daase & Meier, 2012; Garcia, 2012). Suffice it to say that arms control and diplomacy will always remain critical measures for conflict prevention in the nuclear age, where humanity is only minutes away from possible annihilation.
In addition to these basic tactics, it is also important to address the root causes of conflict. As noted earlier, political and military leaders make the decision to go to war, which makes war a social phenomenon rather than a biological one. There is ample evidence that leaders in many conflicts have less than noble goals and that dishonesty plays an important role in many of these decisions. To the extent that this is the case, a free press in a democracy has a duty to report with unflinching vigilance on the justifications for wars, and citizens have a duty to be ready at all times to scrutinise such justifications. As was the case a decade earlier when the United States decided to fight the Vietnam War, critics contend that the press and the public were far too acquiescent in the decision to go to war in Iraq in 2003. Thus, to avoid conflict, the press and public must be constantly prepared to question the justifications for military action. One must be equally prepared for military spending and militarism.
When it comes to preventing or ending weapons and war and limiting the unrestricted use of military force once conflict has begun, social movements have proven successful (Breyman, 2001; Staggenborg, 2010). Responsible nonviolent protest against war and militarism is an important way to prevent conflict or bring a war that has begun to an end more quickly, even if activism offers no guarantee of success.
