6. Operation Whitewash: A R&AW and DRDO Laser Beam Experiment or a Conspiracy Theory?
When a massive avalanche struck the world's highest battleground, trapping 140 Pakistani military and civilian contractors beneath heavy snow, some blamed India, claiming that it was not a natural avalanche but a laser beam experiment conducted by India. According to them, India has been trying laser technology to bring avalanches for a long time, and this time India was successful. Others claim that an unanticipated landslide occurred as a result of significant carbon deposits on glaciated ice and greater absorption of solar radiation.
The codename Operation Whitewash refers to an R&AW and DRDO laser beam experiment, or a conspiracy idea, that includes the utilisation of the Indian KALI project to melt down the sloped ice, causing avalanches. What exactly was Operation Whitewash? Was it a combined DRDO/R&AW operation? Maybe something different; read on to find out more in this article.
Avalanche in Gayari Sector
A massive avalanche slammed a Pakistani military station in Gayari Sector near the Siachen Glacier area on April 7, 2012, burying 140 troops and civilian contractors under heavy snow. The Siachen Glacier area is the highest battlefield in the world. The Pakistani military announced on May 29, 2012, that 129 troops were slain and 11 civilians were murdered; however, unofficial records show that 130 Pakistani soldiers were martyred. The Pakistani army has never seen anything like this before.
This occurrence quickly became the top topic in Pakistani media, with some news outlets accusing India of claiming that it was not a natural avalanche but rather a laser beam experiment conducted by India. According to them, India has been trying laser technology to bring avalanches for a long time, and this time India was successful. On the other hand, another stated that "heavy deposits of carbon on glaciated ice and increased absorption of solar radiation are believed to be the main cause of an unexpected avalanche in the Gayari sector of the Siachen area."
According to Pakistan Meteorological Department statistics, transboundary pollution in the Siachen area generated thick carbon coatings on glacier ice, causing temperature rises, and glacier ice melted and caused an avalanche owing to increased absorption of solar radiation in the Gayari sector.
However, no Indian troops were found within 15 kilometres of either the avalanche site or the avalanche source basin, and no section of the Siachen Glacier is within 30 kilometres of the avalanche site, isolated from the Siachen system by the 5000 to 7500-metre-high Saltoro Ridge.
A non-governmental organisation study revealed poor waste collection by Indian armed forces, which produce 1000 kilogrammes of waste per day that is packed in drums; these drums waste are thrown in crevasses (a deep open crack, especially one in a glacier) at a rate of about 4000 drums per year. The avalanche location, however, lies 15 kilometres west of any section of the Siachen basin, near the Gayari River just below the Bilafond La, none of which comes from or links to the Siachen Glacier system.
What exactly was Operation Whitewash, and how did the term come about?
According to certain unconfirmed sources and conspiracy theories, the Gayari Sector Avalanche was a laser beam experiment undertaken jointly by DRDO and R&AW. It was a highly classified operation known as "Operation Whitewash," which involved the utilisation of the Indian KALI project to melt the sloped ice to generate avalanches that seemed natural, and the term "Operation Whitewash" arose from this.
However, there are no trustworthy or official sources for this operation, and Indian officials do not want the public to know about it.
- DRDO is an acronym for Defence Research and Development Organisation. It is a government organisation located in Delhi, India, that is part of the Department of Defence Research and Development in the Ministry of Defence of the Government of India.
- R&AW stands for Research and Analysis Wing. It is India's foreign intelligence organisation. The major role of the agency is to acquire foreign information, combat terrorism and proliferation, advise Indian policymakers, and advance India's foreign strategic interests. It is based in Delhi, India.
- KALI stands for Kilo Ampere Linear Injector. It's a linear electron accelerator created by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). It is a directed-energy weapon designed to function in such a manner that if an enemy missile is launched towards India, it will rapidly release intense pulses of a relativistic electron beam, completely destroying the target while also damaging the onboard electrical components. According to unofficial sources, it is already operating from a concealed position or was tested in Operation Whitewash, but it has not yet been battle-tested owing to a paucity of such scenarios that would require India to openly confirm its operational presence. However, when Parliament asked the government on July 14, 2018, whether there was any plan to induct KALI 5000 into the armed forces, former Defence Minister of India Manohar Parrikar responded in writing to the Lok Sabha that "the desired information is sensitive in nature, and its disclosure is not in the interest of national security." The government also declined to provide any information about the testing of the KALI laser weapon.
According to the conspiracy theory, Operation Whitewash...
It began in 2009, when the Jawahar Tunnel was blocked owing to excessive snowfall, according to the conspiracy theory. This tunnel links the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is responsible for clearing the snow as quickly as possible to avoid accidents. The DRDO's Laser Science and Technology Centre (LASTEC) was also called upon to expedite work.
BRO and LASTEC worked jointly to remove snow using a large artillery cannon named "KALI" (Kilo Ampere Linear Injector) and minor avalanches. According to conspiracy theorists, a top RA&W official came up with the idea to test the KALI laser weapon for the military from here. This KALI laser weapon was several orders of magnitude more powerful than the KALI cannon used in the Jawahar tunnel.
Officials decided to test this weapon in the Siachen glaciers; thus, an observation team, scientists, and RA&W were dispatched to the Indian Army's Siachen Post. They received altitude training. Theorists claim that everything went according to plan and that the afternoon was chosen for this operation because most natural avalanches in Siachen arrive at noon. However, because this operation was to be carried out from an air platform, many technical issues, such as polarisation and high-precision shooting, arose. To resolve this issue, administrators enlisted the assistance of experts from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.
Scientists analysed the idea and recommended that this surgery be performed in the morning or evening. For this mission, Il-76 planes outfitted with KALI, the Indian Air Force's airborne warning and control system, and one Il-78 jet for replenishment were employed. In combat, Mirage and Sukhoi fighter planes were also deployed. Satellite imagery and 3D landscape visualisation software were also used.
The IL-76 jet began laser firing at 100% precision at trigger sites from a height of 30,000 feet in the early hours of April 7, and the avalanche began at Pakistan's Northern Light Infantry headquarters at roughly 5:40 a.m., with a speed of 300 km/hr.
The Pakistan Army attempted to warn its troops, but hundreds of tonnes of snow falling at a rate of 0 km/h gave them no opportunity. The whole Pakistan Army headquarters was buried in 80 to 100 feet of dense snow in around 10 to 15 minutes. It was a big avalanche that not only severed communication lines but also destroyed some outposts.
According to the Pakistani Army, 124 of its men were killed, whereas the Indian Army claims that more than 130 Pakistani Army personnel were killed. A sheet of 80-foot-thick ice has collected over the Northern Light Infantry headquarters, according to the Pakistan Army.
Following the success of Operation Whitewash, the DRDO has created a tiny, compact replica of KALI for the Indian Army that may be used in any conflict situation. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) are still working on KALI (Kilo Ampere Linear Injector), a linear electron accelerator.
The Gayari Sector avalanche was major destruction for Pakistan’s Northern Light Infantry headquarters in Siachen, which Pakistan will never forget. If Operation Whitewash is not a conspiracy but a highly confidential and secret then operation, then it was a great success for scientists and officers from DRDO, SAS, Bhabha Atomic Research Center, R&AW, and the Indian Military.
However, on 14 July 2018, Parliament asked the government whether there is any proposal to induct KALI 5000 in the armed forces, then former Defence Minister of India Manohar Parrikar replied in writing to the Lok Sabha that “The desired information is sensitive in nature and its disclosure is not in the interest of national security” Government also refused to give any information of testing KALI laser weapon.
