The Indian National Congress was formed.

The Indian National Congress is one of India's oldest political parties. It was started in 1885 when India was still under the control of the British Raj. Allan Octavian Hume, a retired British civil servant who was very upset that Indian people didn't have a voice in government, was the one who came up with the idea for the Congress. (So, there is PAPA) The only goal of the Congress was to give India's educated elites a place where they could all come together and speak out against British rule as one force.

During this time, the British Raj was quickly taking over more and more of the Indian subcontinent, and the Indian people were very unhappy with how the British were treating them. There was no way for the Indian people to get their problems fixed because they had no political voice. Then, Allan Octavian Hume stepped up and persuaded several Indian leaders to join together to form the Indian National Congress. He thought that if the Indian people had their political party, they could fight for their interests and demand rights that they had not had before.

So, on December 28, 1885, the Indian National Congress held its first meeting in Bombay. Seventy-two delegates were there. The original goal of the Congress was to be a place where the Indian people could come together to make decisions and talk about things that affected their lives. The leaders of the Congress thought that the Indian people needed a political voice that could represent their views and help them get their rights back from the British Empire. Over time, Congress was a very important part of India's fight for independence, and its work still inspires people today.
